Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of County buildings, grounds and facilities. Distinguishing Features of the Class Work involves assisting in the maintenance and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment and performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks requiring a general knowledge of building trade skills.Employee also performs grounds maintenance and custodial work.Reports to the Maintenance Supervisor
Examples of Duties: Performs semi-skilled carpentry and renovation work in the construction, repair or alteration of floors, roofs, stairways, partitions, doors, windows and screens; assists in building or repairing partitions, cabinets, tables, shelves, and bookcases. Performs and assists in minor electrical work. Performs maintenance work on heating and air conditioning systems, checking thermostats, couplers, fuses, belts, motors, etc. Performs semi-skilled plumbing tasks including changing faucet washers, stems, seals, etc.; installing water and sanitary fixtures and equipment; and repairing toilets by changing tanks bulbs, overflow tubes, guide wires, etc. Sands, paints or stains wall, woodwork, cabinets, tables and other wooden articles. Assists in handing and finishing sheetrock, paneling, wallpaper, tile and moldings. Mows and trims grass with power mowers and string trimmers; sows grass seed, prunes shrubbery; rakes leaves; polices grounds, picking up debris and depositing in proper receptacle. Deices sidewalks, steps, driveways, parking lots, etc. Maintains power equipment and hand tools, including sharpening blades, cleaning filters, adding grease, oil and gas, etc. Transports materials, supplies, office furniture and equipmentbetween County buildings; may arrange or re-arrange furniture and machinery in County Departments. Performs custodial work, including sweeping, mopping, stripping, buffing and vacuuming floor surfaces, shampooing carpets, cleaning restroom areas and replenishing paper supplies and soap as necessary, and cleaning windows, walls, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures. May operate pickup or dump trucks to transport materials to and from job sites. May stripe parking lots, make signs, hang pictures. etc.; takes inventories of custodial and other minor maintenance supplies. Performs other related work as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of the procedures, materials and equipment related to the plumbing, carpentry, mechanical and electrical trades. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trades involved in the work. Knowledge of the operating characteristics of assigned equipment. Knowledge of the maintenance requirements of assigned equipment. Ability to use and care for a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform general plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and landscape maintenance tasks. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to understand and work from blueprints and specifications. Ability to perform heavy manual labor required by work assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics tools, carpenters tools, electrical tools, plumbing tolls, shovels, rakes, etc.Must be able to operate motorvehicles, including light pickup and dump trucks.Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 75 pounds of force frequently, and /or 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.Physical demand requirements are those of Medium to Heavy Work.
Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school and 6 months to l year of experience in construction or building maintenance; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Special Requirements Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
